Olympic Hockey Recap: The Nobody Cares About Jarome Iginla Edition

“You like me! You really like me!”

After days of sitting through filler, all eyes are on men’s hockey in Vancouver and no matter how hard NBC tried to keep their viewing audience from watching the games, the viewing audience lucked out and caught a glimpse of what they can hopefully expect during the medal rounds.

Team USA kicked off the day by taking on the delegation from Switzerland. The Swiss team was anchored by Anaheim (Mighty) Duck goalie, Jonas Hiller. Prior to the Olympic break, Hiller posted a record of 5-2  and was having a little more success than Team USA’s goalie, Ryan Miller. The Buffalo Sabre, had recently hit the skids and was struggling as of late. Miller had only one win the month of February. But much like the playoffs, the Olympics are an entirely different.

The US were the first to strike 18:59 into the first period. Robert Ryan, not to be confused with Bobby Ryan of the Anaheim (Mighty) Ducks, scored the unassisted goal on his NHL teammate. The  Cherry Hill Giant will be holding his head a little bit higher today.

Bobby Ryan told reporters after yesterday’s win, “Once I scored, I was able to settle down and come back into my own a little bit.” US General manager, Brian Burke understood her team would be nervous and they had every right to be. “This is the big stage. This is Broadway.”

St. Louis Blue David Backes, scored 6 mins into the 2nd and that was followed up by Tampa Bay’s Ryan Malone’s power play goal half way through the second period. By the end of the 2nd period, the US was ahead 3-1 and were up 22 shots to Switzerland’s 15 shots.

Now, I don’t want to say the US mailed it in and didn’t give their 100% during the 3rd period, but they only had 2 shots on goal. TWO – count’em 1-2 shots on goal. It’s bad enough the US Women’s hockey team did it against Russia, but you’re there to win and you want to be intimidating. Enough of this sportsmanship crap. Kick some ass and show these other countries they can’t mess with the stars & bars. The US takes on Norway next.

The US’s next opponent lost last night to Canada in a shut out. Hometown hero, Roberto Luongo, blocked all 15 shots on goal. But the real star of the night was Jarome Iginla. The man who according to Sean Avery nobody cared about because he was too boring, captivated the crowd the with his hat trick – one of which came on the power play.

Dany Heatley followed up Iginla’s performance with 2 goals, Philadelphia’s Mike Richards(who Doc referred to as Washington Capital, Mike Green – Ouch! Burn!) and Ryan Getzlaf & Corey Perry of the (Mighty) Ducks each scored one. Canada’s #1 son, Sidney Crosby, had three assists for the night. Unlike, the US – Canada didn’t lay down in the 3rd period and led with 42 shots on goal. Canada takes on Switzerland on Thursday.

Finally the Russian Federation or Russia as I like to call them, beat Latvia 8-2. Washington Capital, Alex Ovechkin and AK Bars Kazan(not to be confused with the cinematic gem, Kazaam) Danis Zaripov each scored 2 goals. Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburg Penguins and Ilya Kovalchuck of the Atlanta Thrasers New Jersey Devils each scored a goal and recorded an assist.  Russia hits the ice next on Thursday and takes on Slovakia in a game we probably won’t be able to see because NBC are ass hats.

If you’re looking to fill your hockey fix today: Finland takes on Belarus, Sweden plays Germany and the Czech Republic takes on Slovakia.

Firefly For Sale!

So for those of you who may or may not know, The Sandbox on FNX has given Andrew ‘The Package’ Ference, a new nickname. After expressing his dislike for Owl City’s hit single, ‘Fireflies’ - Special Ed decided to take it upon himself and start a campaign to call Andrew, ‘The Firefly’. Hence the artwork he came up with a couple weeks ago.

'Cus I get ten thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs...

BTW, whoever did the musical intro to Ference’s segment is genius. ANYWAYS, so this morning, The Sandbox tried to get him to sign off on the image so WFNX can start producing shirts. Ference tried to weasel his way out of it and mentioned that Lucic shirts are covered in blood and he’ll have a shirt featuring ‘fairy wings’.

Now, Andy(can I call you Andy?), you’re missing an amazing opportunity to raise money for charity and by charity I don’t mean saving Special Ed’s fatty liver, skating lessons for Wideman or a bubble to keep Looch in – so he doesn’t get hurt.

Why not have FNX sell the shirt and have part of the proceeds go to a charity close to you? Perhaps The David Suzuki Foundation or The New England Grassroots Enviroment Fund or maybe you want to save the baby seals? I mean honestly, how can you say ‘NO’ to this?

You don't want me to die - do you, Andy?

So Andy, man up and let The Sandbox sell Firefly Ference shirts – I know an assload of ladies would buy them and how cool would it be to see a sea of  Firefly shirts at a game? And if you want a Firefly Ference shirt – tell Andrew next time you see him….

I bet Sean Avery & Sidney Crosby would say ‘yes’!

Sean Avery Learned From The Best

The man has style. Although, he learned from the best fans ever.

A little inspiration for tomorrow’s game against the Habs.

Special thanks to Caitie from Loochness Monster  for posting these gems on her Facebook. Here’s more shots of the Bruins giving Sean Avery a run for his money in this month’s issue of The Impromper Bostonian. Look for the member of the Montreal Canadiens in next month’s copy of the International Male Catalog. Enjoy!

One more….Just one more!

4639305 Well, Carrie Underwood didn't make it to Boston last night- so the Bruins won! Yay! The B's got their 50th win last night and are one win away from clinching the conference. The Bruins could clinch tonight without even hitting the ice. If the Sabres beat Washington, the Bruins would be the conference champs. So as much as it might pain some of you to support any sports team from New York, root for Buffalo. Who knows, maybe there will be a sea of black and gold celebrating in the streets of Boston this weekend!

But if the KGB don't choke on a big ol' cup of borscht , the B's have to beat the Rangers. The Rangers are a new team since changing coached and Avery join the team. They're currently in 8th place and the Florida Panthers aren't that far behind. Speaking of Avery and I need this shirt

The Rangers bit the bullet and lost to the Hurricanes last night, while the B's won and extended their winning streak to five games Since I'll be at my best friend's wedding shower most of the morning, consider this post also my preview. I'm saying the B's are going to throw down and will beat the Rangers, 3-2. I'm also predicting AT LEAST 3 fights and maybe, just maybe – a Ference/Avery rematch.

If the B's do clinch, drinks should be on Tim Thomas. According to reports that came out late last night, Thomas signed a multi-year deal with the Bruins worth about $5 million a year. Well, deserved if you ask me – but this new deal leads some fans wondering how is this going to financially affect the negotiations with Phil Kessel, Matt Hunwick & this year's Seventh Player Award winner, David Krejci.

Now if you excuse me, I need to go back to writing about The Swedish….

Picture of obviously a miserable Senators fan c/o Chris from HubHockey.com

Who do you blame for the B’s suckage? Alexander Semin – That’s who!

Semin_sushiWow umm….that was pathetic. I'll give the B's credit – they played well. But would it kill them to score more than one goal? The Coyotes are in last place of the Pacific Division and second to last place in the Western Conference and yet they played better than the B's did last night. Granted, this doesn't mean the Coyotes have a chance to make it to the playoffs – but the B's do and they're pissing all of their hard work away.

So what is wrong with them? Well, they don't know:

“I keep coming back to the same answers and the same games, and I don’t know what’s … going on.”  – Aaron Ward

It's easy to say they're sucking and play the blame game. I can't even go to my stock answer of blame Lil' Nicky Kobasew. Yes, he's an overrated ass ( dare I say – the Trot Nixon of the B's?), but at least he put the B's on the board last night. If I had to pin point one thing that caused the slump – it was the Semin goal in the OT loss to the Capitals last week. The B's had a great chance to win that one and out of nowhere, a 80 foot game winning goal put a stop to the B's winning ways and I think the shock (or embarrassment?) of that goal killed whatever momentum they had going. I mean, they just came off of a 6-0 win over the Ducks and a 6-1 win over the Panthers.

With that, the black and gold need to strap it on and throw the finger to Communism, Alex Semin and their losing ways and beat the piss out of the Blackhawks and the Rangers. But be gentle on Jonathan Toews, he's just adorable and just think of all of the goodness you can lay on Sean Avery on Sunday live on NBC!

BUY! SELL! TRADE! Trade Deadline Post & Aaron Ward Poster

Stock traders

First off some personal business, if someone got an Aaron Ward poster last night and doesn't want it – feel free to contact me and I'll barter with you for it.

WHOPPEEE!!! IT'S NHL TRADE DEADLINE DAY!!!!!  I'm sorry, but after last night's piss poor play by the B's – I'm exercising the right to change my original prediction. They need to do something, because THAT can't happen again. I understand they're hurt, tired, rundown and that does put a damper on the team's spirit – but they made complete douches of themselves last night. So here's to hoping something good happens today and whatever it is, it kicks the B's in the ass and get them back on their winning ways. I mean, they do want to win – right? Unless I didn't get a memo and things changed….

Everyone under the sun will be donig their NHL Trade Deadline Coverage today. Toucher & Rich favorite, HubHockey.com will have constant updates on what's going on, Puck Daddy will be live blogging all day and using The Millbury Scale to grade trades, Stanley Cup of Chowder has an open thread with constant updates, Alanah and the Krew @ KulkasKorner are constantly up dating any moves, NESN's Trade Deadline Special stars @ 2:30 and I'll be keeping you up to date with anything I think is important. Like Sean Avery is back in Ranger Blue and will be taking the ice tomorrow night!
