Ristuccia Rink Report 1/11/10

Greetings from chilly Wilmington! I braved the cold today to watch the Bruins practice before they jet off for their West Coast series tomorrow morning.
Gone were the playful, light-hearted Bruins who usually take to the practice ice. This team was physical, determined, and showed more desperation than they have exhibited during the past few games. Practice consisted mostly of game-situation drills and short scrimmages; emphasizing puck possession, capitalizing on (and subsequently, recovering from) turnovers, and maintaining pressure into the corners. Their intensity was rather refreshing, after their lackluster efforts coming into today. As Blake Wheeler said earlier this week, “We have to quit treating this like it’s a privilege and a right of ours to come and play in front of 18,000 people every night. And start playing like it’s the most important thing to us. For whatever reason, I think we lost sight of that night in and night out.” Hopefully this attitude is shared with his teammates and they can start turning things around.

Byron Bitz was dressed and joined the team, without signs of injury or the back pain that has kept him out of the lineup as of late.

Most noticeable was the change in offensive lines. Today saw lines of Lucic, Bégin, Whitfield; Wheeler, Krejci, Ryder; Thornton, Paille, Sobotka; and Sturm, Recchi, Satan. Perhaps this shake-up is something that the Bruins need to regain their composure and recover from missing so many of their major play-makers. Let’s hope so.

Wheeler at bat

The serious air of purpose remained until the players began their cool-down. Thornton led the stretches, lightening the mood as he did so. Afterwards, some of the senior Bruins left the ice, and the young guns were left to goof off. Wheeler, Krejci and Sobotka were last to hit the showers, and entertained themselves by playing baseball while rounding up the pucks.

And of course, it wouldn’t be Wilmington without the fans. Today’s included a girl who shouted at the players that they were “cute,” made signs reinforcing this and held them to the glass. Honey, Shawn Thornton may have laughed when you held up your sign, but he was laughing at YOU and shaking his head. They’re at work; this is their job. If you thought a video store clerk was hot, would you shout at him and wave signs around while he shelved DVDs? On second thought, don’t answer that. Even the men were at it today, as one of them sniped Sobotka’s attempt to give me his stick (that’s what she said?). This was the same guy who loudly asked “Where’s Maaahk Savaahd?” and banged on the glass as if he were at the zoo. At least Sobotka broke his stick before handing it to the guy, and gave me an apologetic shrug.  It’s ok Vlado, we’re still BFFs.

Until next time,

Team Canada Becomes A 5 Year Reunion – Olympic Bound Bruins

"You guys want to do this again on 2010?"

As mentioned on my Twitter, considering the dramatic way Steve Yzerman announced Team Canada this afternoon, Brian Burke should contact Simon Fueller and everyone  at American Idol and have Ryan Seacrest do the announcement of Team USA

“Phil Kessel……You are…….NOT on Team USA.”

Let’s be honest, the best part (for Bruins fans at least!) was the announcement that Patrice Bergeron would be joining the team in Vancouver. Not bad for a kid who didn’t get an invite to camp this summer.  With the addition of Bergy, the Olympic viewers get to check out a mini reunion of sorts of the 2005 Canadian World Juniors Championship Hockey Team  that featured Sidney Crosby(A) – Pittsburgh Penguins, Corey Perry & Ryan Getzlaf - Anaheim (Formerly Mighty) Ducks, Brent Seabrook – Chicago Blackhawks, Shea Webber – Nashville Predators and  Mike Richards - Philadelphia Flyers . For the complete roster of Team Canada, go here

And Patrice isn’t the only Bruin heading to Vancouver in February, Zdeno Chara will be going and representing Team Slovakia, Marco Sturm will be representing Germany and David Krejci will be on the ice in Vancouver for the Czechs

Team USA will be announced on New Year’s Day in conjunction with the Winter Classic. Here’s to hoping Tim Thomas makes the team!

SWINE FLU!

3189065401_70474a32c6Well, maybe this could explain why David Krejci hasn’t been playing as well as expected this season. According to the official Bruins Twitter account, ‘Krejci diagnosed with H1N1, will be isolated from the team until he is symptom and fever free for 24 hrs.’

No word yet on what’s wrong with the rest of the team or if this is Blake Wheeler’s weak attempt at comedy.

Thornton too?

John Bishop just twitter’d that Shawn Thornton is will more than likely not play tonight. Thornton didn’t practice yesterday with the team in Wilmington and there’s been grumblings that he might be more hurt than he’s letting on.

Seriously?

Seriously?

Ok, seriously? What’s next? Will Blake Wheeler be arrested for pedo porn? Krejci & Sobotka being deported? We lose Mark Stuart because he’s a mail order husband and marrying some female tycoon in Jakarta? Seriously…what’s next?

[Douche Bag Edit]

I will hopefully be at the game tonight. More on that story tomorrow. haha

The ‘Thrill’ Is Gone

I have the distinct desire to smack that smile off his face.

I have the distinct desire to smack that smile off his face.

Dear Phil,

You ignorant slut. Congrats on pissing away an amazing opportunity to play in Toronto. The Bruins organization were nothing but supportive and did whatever they could to help you grow as a player. But instead, you decide that you can’t take playing in Boston and would rather start all over again on a team in a bigger market, that won’t be making it into the playoffs or hoisting up Lord Stanley’s beer stein anytime soon(sorry, Curl). Maybe I’m bitter or simple minded(I did go to public school & Pine Mattress College), but I don’t understand how you can tell someone to piss off when they’re offering you an amazing opportunity?

Are you still bitter that Julien had you ride the pine during the ’08 playoffs? Are you upset that Krejci, Wheeler, Hunwick & Bitz are the new young studs on the block and willing to do whatever to win? It sure as hell wasn’t the cash – Lord knows they offered you enough. Did Charlie Jacobs refuse to pay you  in Sour Patch Kids or were they going to force you to eat breakfast? It is the most important meal of the day….

I don’t get it. Since Friday night when the trade was announced, I’ve been trying to figure out what you would want to leave. Yeah, Boston is tough and it’s harsh and the people kind of suck and the media are pains in the ass – but in the grand scheme of things, it could be worse. Instead you’re going to Toronto where hockey is life and they’re going to expect you to earn that pay check. Who knows, maybe a change of scenery is exactly what he needs? Maybe that’ll help you mature or at least use that thing that’s three feet from your ass.

Good luck, bro – you’re gonna need it.

Dear Byron Bitz,
I’ll buy you a beer if you level Kessel on Dec 5th.

It’s been a summer…so far

So how has your summer vacation been?

And how has your summer vacation been?

So we’re at the half way point for summer and while some of you dealt with heat waves, trips to the beach and traveling to different destinations. I’ve been stuck in Boston working and doing very little writing. And since I have the honor of  being the low man on the totem pole at my ‘real’ job - my vacation isn’t until October. I still don’t know where to go, so recommendation are welcomed. Anyways! Please accept my apology and since the summer is almost over(sorry to be so ‘glass is half empty’.), here’s my Summer of 2009 Half-Way Point Post. WHOOOOOO! Enjoy Continue reading

This is the end….

Capt.48b775f5661947778f5d4dbfd6495105.aptopix_stanley_cup_parade_hockey_paks108 So that's it. The end is here. The Pittsburgh Penguins are now the Stanley Cup champs, the Detroit Red Wings are this year's bitter bridesmaids and Ovechkin is on probably on his way collecting some new hardware in Vegas for the NHL Awards. Woo! *fartnoise*

Was I happy with the turn out of the season? Yes & No. I mean, it's been a tough one for me. I had a chance to cover the Bruins, but because I wanted to be the first hockey blogger to talk about Roman War Helmets in a public forum, that opportunity was short lived. Am I still bitter? I won't lie, I am and it's a tad annoying that I still get emails about it on a daily basis. I guess there are worse things to be known for, right? I still wonder if I should have submitted the piece to Deadspin. But there's not much I can do now. Hey, at least I got you bitches. So that's something to be proud of. But I'm hoping one day, I'll be known for being more than just, according to WEEI's Joe Haggerty, as a habitual line stepper.

But personal issues aside, back to the topic at hand – this year's hockey season. I wasn't happy with how everything ended for the Bruins and I know I'm going to come off as a homer and I should be "over it" - but Scott Walker got off light. He shouldn't have been playing and look what happened? Boom! OT goal, Bruins lose -  out of the playoffs. It wasn't supposed to be like that – they were supposed to go on and win The Cup. Well, that's what I had my money on. Not that I'm condoning illegal betting or anything like that. I already had the parade route mapped out in my head and a laundry list of excuses of why I was going to miss work that day. But instead of a summer learning what the members of the B's did with The Cup, we'll be focusing on whom staying, who's coming, who's going and how David Krejci's graham cracker hip is healing. Better luck next year, boys. But thanks for the ride. It was amazing while it lasted.

As for the Stanley Cup champs, I've has a weird relationship with them this season. The first game I was suppose to cover was a Pens game, but because I was 'accidently forgotten' & omitted from the press list, I didn't get to. At the time, I didn't lose too much sleep over it – I assumed I was going to get a chance to interview Geno, Superstar Talbot, Sid the Kid and the rest of the Pens later on in the season. But instead, I got fired and well, that never happened. Although, I would like to thank Puck Daddy for trying to make me feel better, by telling me I wasn't missing much by not talking to Sidney Crosby. I know I don't have the skills, like Cabbie Richards and I'm sure Crosby would have probably been as entertaining as a wet mop, but I still wanted to get the chance to speak to him. Haha Oh well.

But at the end of the day, I was glad they won. They desereved it and I'd rather see them win, than the Red Wings. By the way, it's nice to see their fans are taking this loss in stride and being classy about it. *rolls eyes*

So now what? The draft is coming up, but we already know where John Tarvares is more than likely going. The NHL releases next season's schedule at the end of July, so there's something to look forward to. I'm sure Phoenix Coyotes drama is far from over and it'll be interesting to see who does what in the off season. So now, all we can do is sit and wait for the next hockey season(or the next season of Project Runway whichever comes first.). As for me, I'll be here and look forward to a review of Alyssa Milano's baseball epic. Because I know you all are dying to know more about it and whether or not I kill myself before the 6th chapter. I figure, it can't be any worse than the bullshit you all read here. :)

Krejci re-signs with the B’s!

Krecji Oh happy day! David Krejci, the man who makes everyone look better, resigned with the Bruins yesterday and we can expect the Czech to stick around for another three years. The Bruins didn't comment on the terms of the contact, but reports are coming out that the three year deal will cost the team around 11 million.

Now we just have to wait and see what the team does with Phil Kessel, Matt Hunwick and Byron Bitz.

Game Seven

B15__1242178820_2811 This is it, people. Game seven! Someone is going to be setting up tee times tomorrow and while the other will be prepping to play the Penguins. The momentum has shifted and the B's have won the last two games. So this will be easy, right? Who knows.

But after the performance we got during Game 6, I'm thinking the people in Boston are going to be very happy tonight. I cannot wait for the game – it's going to be amazing! I could say more, but it's already  been  said. We all know what they need to do.

LET'S GO B'S!!!

Mike Wendt made this great video – add him on Twitter!

If the Bruins needed another reason to win – do it for Mikey!

By the way, congrats to the Pittsburgh Penguins who demolished the Washington Capitals last night! I recommendy you watch the video Puck Daddy, Greg Wyshynski, did. Mike Green was just not having it when it came to the handshake. I guess that's what happens when you get pulled in the third period for playing like crap. At least he has his sack to come home to.

One Game Can Change Everything

05122009thornton

I posted the Kevin Millar comment from 2004 yesterday and I decided to take some liberties and put a Bruins spin to it. Lame….I know. But here ya go!

"Don’t let us win tonight. This is a big game. They’ve got to win because we’ve got Ward coming back today and then we'll  be back in Boston for Game 7 and then you can take that fraud stuff and put it to bed. Don’t let the Bruins win this game." – Jack Edwards, May 12, 2008

Go Bruins!!
